Trips

We are delighted to offer our students a wide variety of learning experiences outside the classroom to support and enhance the learning that goes on inside the classroom. We believe these are an invaluable part of our student’s education and strongly encourage students to participate. The school runs many day trips for students, including theatre trips for Drama, Geography field trips and visits to academic conferences and museums across our academic subjects.

We have a long-standing annual exchange with the Holstenschule in Neumunster, Germany, for our students learning German. In addition, we have biannual exchanges with the Institut St. Louis St. Clement in Viry-Chatillon, France, and with a school in Salamanca for our students learning French and Spanish, respectively.

Other recent overseas visits include the annual History Department trip to the Battlefields for Year 9, the Theatre Studies Trip to New York, and the Music Department’s trip to Sorrento. We are looking forward to the Geography trip to Iceland in October half term.

On the sporting front, on top of our regular home and away fixtures in various sports, the Sports Department organises an extensive overseas rugby tour every three years. Previous destinations have included Australia, South Africa, Canada and New Zealand, and over the summer, we took our biggest rugby touring group to Argentina. We host an annual football tour for Year 9 students, Year 10 have a cricket tour to Jersey, and we have introduced a Year 8 rugby tour. Our annual Ski and Snowboard Trip in the Easter Holidays is also very popular. The trip alternates between Europe and North America. In 2023, 64 students visited Jasper, Canada, the fourth visit to Jasper for the school. In 2024, 104 students jetted off to Passo Tonale in Italy.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is very popular at Halliford, with 90% of Year 9 students and many Year 10 students currently participating in the Bronze and Silver Award programmes whilst the Sixth Formers enjoying the Gold Award. These involve training days at Halliford, a practice expedition, and a qualifying expedition, usually in the Summer Term or the first half of the Autumn Term. Next year, we aim to take our Gold Award students to Norway for their qualifying expedition.

Activities Week at the end of the Summer Term provides an ideal opportunity to get students of all ages involved in a variety of activities both on and off the school site, which include the Year 7 residential trip to France, an overnight stay at an Activities Centre for Year 8 and the Year 9 visit to Ypres. Year 10 students take on various physical challenges at a residential trip whilst the Sixth Form have had Careers training, visits to Thorpe Lake, a London Orienteering Challenge and UCAS personal statement seminars.
