The Maths Department at Halliford is staffed by 6 highly experienced teachers who collectively have an established track record of delivering academic success at all levels. Halliford students are encouraged to think logically, communicate clearly in both verbal and written explanations, and to enjoy the experience of progressing in this challenging discipline.
In Year 7, our students are taught in mixed-ability classes throughout the academic year. Most of the first year at secondary level is focused on giving students a confident grasp of the basics of number, geometry, measures and statistics. In Years 8 – 11, groups are taught in performance sets, each numbering approximately 20 – 23 students. Sets movements occur at the end of the Autumn and Summer terms, ensuring that each student is progressing at an appropriate pace.
Students follow the Edexcel (9-1) Mathematics (Specification A) syllabus. The IGCSE qualification is recognised globally and provides learners with the same progression routes as the equivalent GCSE qualification. The IGCSE Mathematics is provided at two tiers of entry, Higher and Foundation, which allows students to be entered for a level appropriate to their ability. Our top three sets take the Higher tier, and our bottom set takes the Foundation tier.
Students follow the Edexcel Mathematics syllabus. This qualification includes separate papers for pure and applied mathematics. The pure mathematics content accounts for two-thirds of the qualification, the applied (mechanics and statistics) content, one-third. We also offer Further Mathematics at A Level for our most exceptional mathematicians.
Students are entered for national Mathematics competitions, and we have had many students win Gold, Silver and Bronze awards at all levels of the UKMT Maths Challenges.
